About

Mission Statement

The Salt Lake Mormon Studies Student Association was established to foster the academic study of Mormonism among graduate and undergraduate students in the Salt Lake City area. SLMSSA activities and events will help students network, keep abreast of developments in the academic study of Mormonism, facilitate interaction between students and established scholars of Mormonism, and generally promote academic development.

To achieve this, the Association hopes to sponsor socials, public lectures, and other events.

Any student enrolled in a college or university located in Salt Lake County is eligible for membership though we welcome participation from friends who are students in other areas or other non-students.

What is “Mormon Studies”?

There has been some discussion recently about what “Mormon Studies” is.   For our purposes here, Mormon Studies refers not to a distinct  subdiscipline like Religious Studies or American Studies but refers collectively to academic explorations of Mormonism in a given discipline whether it be history or sociology or literature, etc. We welcome all aspects of the academic examination of Mormonism.
